Pond Restoration Latest

Nepcote pond update. August 2024

Works to reinstate the pond were completed at the end of March earlier this year.

Since then the pond and environs have gradually matured and as a result of all the rain we have had this year the habitat is a bit overgrown and the silt trap almost full.

Duckweed has also covered the pond and whilst cleared a month or so ago has reappeared.

Our pond expert revisited the pond recently and confirmed this is native English common duckweed and perfectly normal for this to grow at such a rate in these summer conditions. Not a bad weed, just a high growth which will continue until water lilies’ and bank side plants get fully growing.

Most disappointingly, the beetle habitat has been vandalised and the timber thrown into the pond along with several cans.

This was all cleared, as has the duckweed and silt trap.

He also spotted that someone has introduced some non native pond plants which could become a problem, advising it is important non-native or unsuitable plants are not allowed to establish.

To this end could we ask anyone wanting to contribute plants to advise FPC so our pond expert can check suitability.

It is so important in these early stages to get the correct balance of pondlife and would therefore thank all for your co-operation in this.

We hope you all agree the Information Board pictured below is a real benefit to the project.
